My two favorite bass players (Bootsy Collins and Jah Wobble) in back to back posts, and there was ab-soul-lutely no preplanning involved. Weird. There's a word for something like this and it's on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember the damn word. Kismet? Nah. All I'm hearing is Bad Baby played over and over on a turntable. Don't interfere. Here's the vinyl rip of the original UK Metal Box...Someone left a baby in a car parkNever any reasonDon't you listen to one more sob storystop, stop,...

One can argue that the 1962 Apollo Theatre James Brown show is better than the James Brown 1971 Olympia with the original J.B.'s that happened to have included Bootsy Collins on bass and Chicken Gunnels on trumpet. One can argue that, but they'd more than likely have to concede that the Olympia show is the funkier of the two. That's all I'm saying. Haters hate. Enjoy the show! From All Music Guide:Recorded in 1971 at L'Olympia in Paris, France, LOVE POWER PEACE is the only live recording with t...

I'd never heard of Larisa Shepitko until a few days ago, but since watching her 1966 movie Wings, I've become a diehard, lifelong fan. Carried by lead actress Maya Bulgakova, who appears in nearly every frame, Wings is one of those films where each shot is perfect, but nothing feels staged. We'll be posting her later film Ascent soon, so watch out for more Shepitko! From Larushka Ivan-Zadeh:On June 2 1979 one of cinema's greatest female directors was killed in a car crash outside Leningrad. She ...

If you've never heard the Stone Roses, now's the time to fall in love with the four mop-tops from Manchester. If you're already a Stone Roses fan, there are enough rare tracks on this re-issue of their first album to make you fall in love with them all over again. The Legacy Edition DVD of the band's Blackpool gig in 1989 will soon follow. Enjoy! From Mick Middles:In Manchester, I can personally recall, the Evans promotional machine was, at once, invigorating and infuriating. At the time I was w...

The last few days have been downright horrible, so I took some time off from posting. Instead, I've been attempting to Mesmerize either my mockingbird, Jose Jr., or the cannibal ground squirrel who lives in my back yard, to perform a certain service for me. It's a longshot, but I'd swear the flesh-eating squirrel is tracking the trail of water with it's eyes. But enough of my private hell. Here's some more Kurosawa, because you can never have too much Kurosawa. Kiyoshi, that is.From Tom Mes:Cur...

Sins of the Fleshapoids takes place a miilllllion years in the future... and since we're on an XviD roll in the present, now seems like the perfect time to post some Kuchar. Director's commentary is included, and I'll post this in x264 when I get my hands on the DVD. If you're new to the gripping melodrama of the Kuchar brothers this is a great place to start. If you're already a fan, keep an eye out for more! From Mike Everleth:I first saw Mike Kuchar’s Sins of the Fleshapoids probably over ...

In noticing that the site had reached 5,055 visitors in StatCounter last night (you are all being closely monitored...), the number scheme got me to thinking about how much I had liked Charlotte Gainsbourg's 5:55. So a post was in order.Air, Jarvis Cocker, Neil Hannon, and Nigel Godrich were all involved in the making of 5:55, and this gave the chanteuse a solid foundation to work her seductive magic, which she works in spades. I was completely lost with her Beck-produced IRM, but this former t...

And you thought I'd let a Canadian hijack this site on the Fourth of July. Hmmmmmmmph. Never. ForTheDishwasher bleeds red, white and blue on this all-holy of days, and what better way to celebrate the Fourth than to commemorate my country's birthday with crazy chicks shooting guns.'But leclisse, none of these films are even American, and there aren't any guns in La Nana. I'm perplexed!?!'Yeah, you're right. It doesn't make a damn bit of sense, and the only reason La Nana is even in this post is...
