I inadvertently opened a big can of worms for myself when I posted that last Kinks Rare Anthology, because in going through the songs on that one, it made me take a look at all the myriad versions of similar Kinks rarities bootlegs that are out there. In particular, I was interested in addressing the whole 'Great Lost Kinks Album' Confusion. That is, sorting out all the variations on what is known as 'The Great Lost Kinks Album' rarities compilations. So, here's the background; In 1973, as the Kinks were moving to their new record label, RCA, their old US label, Reprise, tried to cash in one last time by releasing, without permission from Ray Davies or the Band, a collection of miscellaneous previously unreleased tracks from 1969-70, which was called 'The Great Lost Kinks Album' (GLKA). Once Ray found out about this, he had the album stopped and pulled from release. Since then, it has been a sought after collector's item. Of course, various bootleg versions of it then came along, and in the CD age, usually including numerous other outtakes and rarities as additional tracks to fill out the CD. The most famous of these, known as the 'New' or 'Neue Revue GLKA', contained contained 30 outtake tracks covering from 1963-1970. There have been literally dozens of variations on this theme, most based at least somewhat on the original GLKA and 'New' variants, but all of them sharing many of the same tracks. Now, for a fan of the group such as myself, I will snag any rarities collection I can find, but when it comes to actually playing the music, it's a bit annoying that so many of the same tracks are on all these different boots. Well, so what I have been working on for the past week or so, is sorting through this mess and compiling this 'Ultimate GLKA Collection', which takes all of the unique tracks from over a half dozen different of these GLKA variants, and putting them into one compilation. Thus, this should be the only 'Great Lost Kinks Album' you ever need. I've managed to fit this on the equivalent of 2 discs. Disc 1 includes all of the original GLKA, as well as the additional tracks that were planned to comprise Dave Davies abandoned 'solo' album (Dave's songs done by the Kinks) from around this time (1969), dubbed 'The Album That Never Was' by later boots. Disc 2 is composed of the other miscellaneous demos, outtakes, and alternate versions of songs from various sessions from 1963-1970. Now, what this compilation does NOT tackle, are all of the different BBC, radio and TV show sessions from these periods, as that is a whole 'nother mess of overlapping boots covering these types of tracks. And I wasn't up to sorting through those right now. Anyway, for this compilation (compiled from such known bootlegs as 'GLKA extended versions', 'Neue Revue GLKA', 'Rare and unreleased recordings 1963-1970', 'Kinky Boots', 'To Kinkdom Kome', 'Four Respected Gentleman', and other variations), I've taken the best sounding versions of each unique track and put them all together with no duplication. Now, of course, many of these songs were eventually released as bonus tracks in various reissues and compilations (although usually in somewhat different mixes or versions), but this compilation includes all the original bootleg track versions. So, here it is, my ultimate version of the GLKA, which could also be called 'Klarifying the Great Lost Kinks Album Konfusion', available exclusively here at 'The Chronicles'.
