Sobre a Série
O cientista policial Barry Allen foi atingido por um raio e banhado por vários produtos químicos, ganhando supervelocidade e se tornando o Flash. The Flash (Pet Fly Produtions, 1990) foi uma das melhores adaptações de uma HQ já feita para a TV.
Essa história começou quando os donos da Pet Fly, Danny Bilson e Paul DeMeo, aproveitaram seus trabalho recente com super-heróis (tinham acabado de vender a idéia de Rocketeer para a Touchstone) e tentaram vender para a CBS uma serie chamada Unlimited Powers. O projeto teria como estrelas o Arqueiro Verde, Bloko (não me pergunte quem é esse) e Flash, mas foi recusado. Como o aniversário de 50 anos da criação do Flash (personagem criado em 1940) se aproximava, a série acabou virando só The Flash.
Aproveitando o orçamento liberado pela CBS e contando com o apoio do pai, Bruce - diretor de Agente 86 e Mulher-Maravilha, entre outros --, Danny Bilson chamou uma equipe de 8 excelentes roteiristas. Liderados por Howard Chaykin (American Flagg), a equipe preparou um episódio-piloto com custo de superprodução: US$ 6 milhões. O ator escolhido para ser o Corredor Escarlate foi o na época desconhecido John Wesley Shipp. Chamaram a atriz Amanda Pays para interpretar a Dra. Tina McGee, praticamente repetindo seu papel de cientista na extinta série Max Headroom. A escolha não podia ser melhor. Além de bom ator, John Wesley Shipp tinha físico pra convencer tanto como o cientista Barry Allen quanto como o herói Flash, e Amanda Pays viveu o auge de sua carreira no papel da Dra. McGee.
O episódio-piloto reconta a origem do herói: Barry, filho e irmão de policiais bem sucedidos, sofre o acidente com o raio e se torna o Flash pra vingar o irmão morto por uma gangue (nossa, que original...). O interessante é a desculpa criada pro uniforme dele: o atrito destrói qualquer roupa que ele esteja usando, exceto seu uniforme, um protótipo de traje de mergulho feito pra resistir a pressões altíssimas. O piloto também incluía os já tradicionais alivios cômicos da série: o parceiro de Barry no laboratório, Julio (Alex Desert), e os policiais Bellows (Vito DAmbrosio) e Murphy (Bill Manard) - experts em fazer tudo errado. Apesar desses detalhes, o resultado final foi excelente e teve ótima aceitação. Com o sucesso, a CBS deu carta branca pra Pet Fly continuar produzindo The Flash.
Vieram então os primeiros problemas. A equipe de roteiristas teve que ser reduzida de 8 pra 3 (Chaykin, John Francis Moore e Gail Morgan Hickman), o orçamento apertou e a CBS decidiu do nada mudar a política da série: na assinatura do contrato, a rede de TV tinha exigido que The Flash fosse uma série policial, mas mudou de idéia durante a temporada. Por isso, a série não tem muitos supervilões (2 dos quadrinhos; Trickster e o Capitão Frio, e mais Gideon, o Dr. Carl Tanner, Trachmann, o Fantasma, Pollux e Omega em 22 episódios). Apesar de ter episódios memoráveis e de ser uma série de super-heróis acima da média, o lucro não chegava, e a pequena Pet Fly não suportou os prejuízos, interrompendo a série logo na primeira temporada.
